The USA, ostensibly the world’s leading military power, is not only proving it can’t win wars—Iraq and especially Afghanistan showed that—but that it is ideally situated to lose them…catastrophically. After getting pummeled and chased out of the Middle East by Iran, the American military has used up much of its weapons stock, and is no longer in a position to threaten China. The war on Russia through Ukraine may be shaping up as an almost equally disastrous failure.
So what do you do when your military has been exposed as a paper tiger? You reach for the nukes. That, at least, is what a number of alarming developments suggest Mad Uncle Sam may be contemplating. Credible leaks that Trump has tried to use nuclear weapons against Iran, alongside the recent revision of US nuclear doctrine to lower the nuclear threshold, have got sane observers scratching their heads and reaching for the panic button.
Is this all really as bad as it looks? And if so, what can be done about it? Ron Unz thinks that both the Russian and Chinese leadership have good options to remove the threat through bold pre-emptive action: A pre-announced Russian hypersonic missile strike on NATO HQ, and/or a blockade of Taiwan.
